Yes, Trump Is A Racist

By Grace Lidia Suárez

Trump’s third child Eric has come to his defense to assure us that his dad is not a racist. That’s because he really only cares about money, Eric says.

In a statement that probably needed some professional polishing, he said,

My father sees one color, green. That is all he cares about,” Eric Trump said on Fox & Friends, a show regularly watched by his dad. “He cares about the economy. He does not see race. He is [the] least racist person I ever met in my entire life.”

Of course, as Newsweek points out (citing the New York Times),

That comment, which came during a meeting with Congressional leaders about immigration, prompted the New York Times to publish a “definitive” list of “Donald Trump’s racism.”

The list started with accusations from the 1970s against Trump and his father for discriminating against black renters in their apartment complexes and also featured the racially charged full-page ads he took out in 1989 that called for the death penalty for five men accused of raping a woman in Central Park. The men were later exonerated.

More recently, of course, Trump called Mexicans “rapists” and drug dealers, referred to a Hispanic Miss Universe as “Miss Housekeeping,” retweeted anti-Islam conspiracy videos, trafficked in anti-Semitic memes and called Senator Elizabeth Warren “Pocahontas” even as he was supposedly honoring Native American World War II heroes at a White House event.

The proof of Trump’s racial pudding is in the eating, and today Homeland Security announced that it was denying visas to people from Haiti from applying for seasonal and temporary visas, turning Trump’s words into harsh reality. As he said himself, “Why do we need more Haitians? Take them out.” Obviously DHS is only too happy to oblige.

This announcement follows action taken last week:

The Trump administration also recently ended temporary protected status for about 60,000 Haitians granted them after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.

One important thing to keep in mind is that the people who come on these temporary visas contribute to the US economy without taking any tax dollars from us. As reported by NBC,

Michael Clemens, a senior fellow at the non-partisan Center for Global Development, said the move eliminates the only U.S. work visa that [is] almost everyone in Haiti can apply to get. The number of Haitians who get the visa is in the hundreds.

Other visas require higher skill levels and education. Most Haitians don’t qualify for family sponsored visas and because of the number of Haitians already in the U.S. the diversity visa lottery is not open to them.

Clemens said barring Haitians from the visa will encourage illegal migration to the U.S. and hurt the U.S. economy.

“Haitian farmworkers on the H-2A visa that I have studied in Alabama added $4,000 to the U.S. economy per worker, per month,” said Clemens, who is a labor economist.

If Donald Trump is the least racist person Eric Trump has ever met, it probably says more about the kind of people Eric has met than it does about his father.

And just in case you’re not sufficiently depressed, I leave you with this quote from Bob Dole, from a time when Republicans had decent men in their ranks.

Bob Dole at 1996 RNC: “If there’s anyone who has mistakenly attached themselves to our party in the belief that we are not open to citizens of every race and religion…the exits, which are clearly marked, are for you to walk out of as I stand this ground without compromise.”
