First, a little background on that line (which Trump has used before, mis-attributing it, of course). It comes from a song by the magnificent and underrated Oscar Brown Jr. The song is called “The Snake” and it’s about a woman who finds a snake that is freezing to death. She takes it home and saves it, and the snake rewards her by inflicting a fatal bite. When she asks the snake why it did that, its answer is,
Oh shut up, silly woman, ” said the reptile with a grin
You knew damn well I was a snake before you took me in
Early on in his campaign, Trump took in Steve Bannon. He made the controversial editor of Breitbart his chief strategist, then fired him in August.
Now Bannon has fully turned on Trump, calling his meeting with Russians “treasonous,” according to a new book.
Bannon’s quotes appear in the book Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, by Michael Wolff, which details the the first year of the Trump presidency. In the book, parts of which were published by New York Magazine Wednesday, Wolff quotes Bannon candidly and disparagingly talking about the 2016 meeting between Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, Donald Trump’s campaign manager Paul Manafort—who the FBI has since indicted on a litany of federal charges—and several Russian operatives.
“Even if you thought that this was not treasonous, or unpatriotic, or bad shit, and I happen to think it’s all of that, you should have called the FBI immediately,” Bannon said. ”That’s the brain trust they had. The three senior guys in the campaign thought it was a good idea to meet a foreign agent inside Trump Tower in the conference room on the 25th floor – with no lawyers. They didn’t have any lawyers.”
Bannon also said it was highly unlikely the group didn’t take a trip one flight up to Donald Trump’s campaign headquarters afterwards to report on the meeting. “The chance that Don Jr did not walk these jumos up to his father’s office on the twenty-sixth floor is zero,” Bannon said.
The White House released this statement, according to the New York Times.
From press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders:
Statement from the President of the United States
Steve Bannon has nothing to do with me or my Presidency. When he was fired, he not only lost his job, he lost his mind. Steve was a staffer who worked for me after I had already won the nomination by defeating seventeen candidates, often described as the most talented field ever assembled in the Republican party.
Now that he is on his own, Steve is learning that winning isn’t as easy as I make it look. Steve had very little to do with our historic victory, which was delivered by the forgotten men and women of this country. Yet Steve had everything to do with the loss of a Senate seat in Alabama held for more than thirty years by Republicans. Steve doesn’t represent my base—he’s only in it for himself.
Steve pretends to be at war with the media, which he calls the opposition party, yet he spent his time at the White House leaking false information to the media to make himself seem far more important than he was. It is the only thing he does well. Steve was rarely in a one-on-one meeting with me and only pretends to have had influence to fool a few people with no access and no clue, whom he helped write phony books.
We have many great Republican members of Congress and candidates who are very supportive of the Make America Great Again agenda. Like me, they love the United States of America and are helping to finally take our country back and build it up, rather than simply seeking to burn it all down.
Trump supporters have piled on Bannon, with Don Jr. leading the charge.
Wow, Just looked at the comments section on Breitbart. Wow. When Bannon has lost Breitbart, he’s left with . . . umm, nothing.

One is tempted to stand back and heed the words of Woodrow Wilson, “Never … murder a man who is committing suicide.” But I can’t resist.
Bannon is a true snake. He will not be afraid to take down Trump in revenge for his humiliation at Trump’s hands in August. And I’m willing to bet he’s got receipts.
I just finished reading the excerpt of The Book in New York Magazine. Wow. At first it seems incredible. Then I think how Trump has actually behaved and I think.
It sounds true.
Trump decided to take in the snake, and now it has well and truly bitten him.
