Trump Attempts To Slut-Shame Female Senator

By David Malcolm

Trump hit a new low in blasting a female senator for daring to call for his resignation in what some have called a ‘slut-shaming’ Tweet. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a Democrat in New York, was one of three senators who called for Trump to resign after sexual harassment allegations against him surfaced once again.

Kirsten Gillibrand was one of four senators who called for Trump’s resignation: Bernie Sanders from Vermont, Cory Booker of New Jersey and Jeff Merkley from Oregon. In typical fashion, Trump singled out Gillibrand in a Tweet which critics claim used proactive innuendo and was deemed to be ugly and inappropriate at a time when sexual harassment against women has entered the national and international debate.

Trump’s comments came a day after three women who previously accused Trump of sexual harassment shared their stories in an interview on NBC. They make up to sixteen women who accused Donald Trump of sexual harassment during his presidential campaign. Their description of his behavior matches up with his infamous comments from the 2006 Hollywood Access video. Three of the women called for Congress to launch an investigation into the allegations against Trump in a press conference in New York.

His claims that he had never met the women have been deemed false by his earlier references to the women in question. In addition, Sarah Huckabee Sanders claimed that the White House would produce a list of eyewitnesses who could disprove the claims that Trump met the women. No one has yet explained the paradox how eyewitnesses can prove that someone never met someone else. Whatever the case may be, the list has yet to appear.

Trump has also called the allegations smears by the Democrats, claiming that the allegations are not only part of a political witch hunt but prove that there was no collusion with Russia during last year’s election. Both claims are highly spurious and as Mueller’s recent actions have shown, mostly false.

However, Trump has once again picked a fight with the wrong person. Kristen Gillibrand has been speaking out against sexual harassment for years and was one of the first Democrats to insist that Al Franken resigns after allegations against him surfaced. She has made a name for herself by pushing for reforms over how the US military handles claims of sexual misconduct.
Moreover, she has taken up the call for a congressional investigation over Trump’s treatment of women to be convened if he does not resign. She also hit back against Trump with her own Tweet:

Elizabeth Warren, who has also seen the rough edge of Trump’s tongue over calling her ‘Pocahontas’, also came to Gillibrand’s defense and reminding Trump, and all of us, who he’s dealing with:

It is no surprise that Trump decided to attack Gillibrand while completing ignoring the three male senators who also called for his resignation. This is far from the first time that Trump has attacked women in such a way and only reinforces the idea that he holds no real respect for women. His Tweet also signals a major backlash against the #MeToo hashtag which helped encourage thousands of men and women to talk about their experiences.

Calls for his resignation or for an investigation by Congress to take place will only grow strong in the light of this attack against a female Senator who has herself been a strong voice of opposition to sexual misconduct. If Trump was hoping to dismiss the allegations or push against the image of him as a misogynist, he failed miserably.

As more allegations come to light, and as more powerful people lose their jobs over such allegations, Trump doe himself no favors by trying to stay in power. He might control the White House and even Congress, but even his Tweets cannot turn the tide of public opinion. The backlash against #MeToo will grow stronger with his defiance but it will hopefully be drowned by those who respect women’s rights and reject any and all attempts to demean, shame or silence those who have been abused by those in positions of power.

Gillibrand will not be silenced and as she said herself, millions of other women will no longer be silenced either. No one deserves to be bullied, especially by a slut-shaming immature bully who happens to be President of the United States. After the revelations over Harvey Weinstein, the tide has turned against those who see either men or women as objects, mere playthings to satisfy their lust.

Once again, Trump has picked the wrong person to attack and once again, he may come to regret it.

  1. A year ago I was wondering how Dump could manage to speak with both feet in his mouth. Now, i think we can certainly say “F**k the feet, he’s well past the kneecaps by now.”
When is this bad dream ever going to end?
