Trump’s “Other” Bad News Today

By Susan Kuebler

In what would be considered possibly the worst day of Donald Trump’s presidency, there was more bad news besides the Mueller investigation.  Some of it may have gotten lost in the noise over the indictments of Manafort and Gates and the devastating guilty plea of Papadopoulos.

The Associated Press reported earlier today that a federal judge ruled Trump’s ban on transgender people serving in the military likely would not prevail in the upcoming lawsuit and issued a ban on his ban.  This is just one is a series of the judiciary rulings overturning Trump’s unilateral actions he has taken since becoming president.

For those who recall, Trump issued this ban without consulting any of the generals or other military advisers available to him.  It was, in fact, a ploy to appease the Freedom Caucus in the House during the first failed attempt to repeal Obamacare.  And to use one of Trump’s best words, it backfired “bigly.”  No one in the military supported the move, including his own Secretary of Defense General Mattis, who issued a “freeze” on implementing the ban until it had undergone judicial review, according to state media Fox News.

Next came the latest Gallup poll.  While it is important to understand that Trump generally polls lower in Gallup that most of the other major polling groups, his numbers today reached a record low, even for Gallup.  As reported by Bloomberg News, amongst other media sources, Trump’s approval ratings have dropped to a record low of 33 percent while his disapproval rating reached a record high of 62 percent.

It is important to note that this poll was conducted prior to the announcement of the indictments of Manafort and Gates, along with the guilty plea of Papadopoulos which indicates clear collusion with Russia by campaign operatives.

Perhaps members of his family and inner circle are telling Trump that he has survived crises before, and it is true that he has managed to get through situations that would have sunk any other politician.  But that may be due more to the fact that Trump is a shameless liar with a core base of supporters who don’t care that he is a shameless liar, than any political skills he “might” possess.

But today is his daughter Ivanka’s birthday today, so perhaps they should be grateful that Jared wasn’t also indicted today as well.  So much for the good news.
