Trump’s Plummeting Poll Numbers

By Susan Kuebler

A second poll, this one conducted by WSJ/NBC, in the past week shows Trump’s approval ratings at their lowest level in his presidency.

The Daily Beast reports that according to NBC these numbers “mark the lowest in modern times for a president at this stage of his presidency.”  In fact, the above graph shows that at no time since becoming president has Trump’s approval even approached 50%.  These numbers also reflect a decline of 10 percent since September, when Trump’s approval received a slight bump following the hurricane relief efforts in Texas and Florida.

So why are the numbers so low now?  Well, let’s see.

There was the Trump trip to Puerto Rico which showed him helping out by throwing rolls of paper towels to the citizens there.  In addition, his administration’s response to the devastation in that island following Hurricane Maria have been much less than stellar.  Well over a month after the hurricane and 75 percent of the residents of Puerto Rico still have no electricity.  And the recent, highly controversial $300 million contract awarded to the two-man Whitefish Energy which has been publicly disavowed by FEMA hasn’t helped matters either.  This morning the governor of Puerto Rico called for the contract to be cancelled.

Trump’s ongoing war of words with the grieving Gold Star widow of Green Beret Sgt. La David Johnson appears to have disgusted a number of Americans as well, especially when he essentially called the poor woman a liar on Twitter.  Even dragging in his own Chief of Staff John Kelly into the fray by having him appear at a press briefing did little to cool down the flames.

His twitter attack on retiring Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee also appeared to have backfired as well.  While Trump reverted to his tried-and-true tactic of name calling (Liddle’ Bob Corker), Corker’s devastating retort calling the White House an Adult Day Care Center was the topic that trended on Twitter and caught the public’s attention.

Then came Senator Jeff Flake’s memorable and historic speech on the floor of the Senate which many have compared to the Joe McCarthy “Have you no decency, sir” moment.  That this speech was delivered after a “unity” lunch between Trump and the GOP on Capitol Hill, which Trump himself described as a “love fest” shows the fraying seams of the Republican party in D.C.  That Trump would continue to attack two Senators whose votes will be critical for his legislative agenda, and who now have nothing to lose by opposing him, shows just how blind and tone-deaf Trump is when it comes to politics.

There is no love lost between Trump and NBC, who he has singled out in his recent attacks on the press and the First Amendment, but the Wall Street Journal has rarely criticized the president or his performance.  No doubt Trump and his supporters will label this poll as “FAKE NEWS” but if they do, then they also need to take a look at the second poll conducted last week that showed Trump’s approval rating at 38 percent as well.

That’s Fox News reporting Donald Trump.  No way you can claim Fake News on this poll.

Both polls were conducted prior to the revelation on Friday that sealed indictments have been issued in the Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.  Trump and his Fox flunkies have been desperately dragging up any and all outrageous claims about Hillary Clinton, included the thoroughly discredited uranium deal with Russia in an attempt to deflect from the Russia investigation.  In the upside-down world of the White House, Clinton is now responsible for the Steele dossier, which is fake, but she did it, and didn’t report it before the election, so she is the one who colluded with the Russians to hurt her chances.
