I swear, the Republican Party must have passed a law that none of us were aware of; saying that they would find the worst candidates possible to run for office. First, it was Donald Trump, then Roy Moore, as if those two weren’t bad enough then Kid Rock threw his hat into the ring. Now, we have former councilwoman of Doral, Florida; Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera, who claims to have been abducted by aliens when she was 7 years old.
The congress hopeful claims that the starship she was brought aboard was being piloted by quartz type rocks. The aliens, one male, and two female told her that the worlds “energy center” resides in Africa. They also let her in on the secret that Coral Castle (a popular tourist destination in Miami-Dade County made of limestone) is an ancient Egyptian pyramid. This wasn’t a one-time encounter though. According to Mrs. Aguilera, she remained in contact with her alien friends for many years after her initial abduction.
When a 2009 tape of her describing her encounter surfaced recently, she doubled down by saying; “For years people, including Presidents like Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter and astronauts have publicly claimed to have seen unidentified flying objects and scientists like Stephen Hawking and institutions like the Vatican have stated that there are billions of galaxies in the universe and we are probably not alone. I personally am a Christian and have a strong belief in God, I join the majority of Americans who believe that there must be intelligent life in the billions of planets and galaxies in the universe.”
Rodriguez Aguilera is running for the seat of retiring representative, Ilena Rod-Lehtinen. Thankfully, she’s unlikely to win, as she only raised $10,000 last quarter. She attributed her poor fundraising numbers to Hurricane Irma.
It’s embarrassing that the party that I’ve associated myself with my entire voting life has gone full on Alex Jones and Infowars crazy. It shouldn’t be this hard to find candidates that are qualified, not crazy and at least on the spectrum of the mainstream. Yet, it seems like the Republican Party is searching far and wide to find people who are rejected as jokes by the country at large. It’s just sad.
