If you’re still denying climate change, then you’re not paying attention to the World around you. Antarctic penguins are striving to stay alive. Adelie penguins are the ones struggling. Only 2 chicks out of 18,000 pairs survived. The rest of the chicks died of starvation. You read that right…starvation.
Why are the baby Adelie penguins dying of starvation? The unusually thick sea ice had forced the adult penguins to travel further to forage for food. Not to mention, leaving the adult penguin behind for a longer than normal span without food. Yan Ropert-Coudert, a scientist at Dumont D’Urville research station next to the penguin colony, said the region had been affected by the breakup of the Mertz glacier in 2010 that changed the configuration of the stretch of sea in front of the colony.

Head of WWF polar programs said, “the devastation was as if ‘Tarantino does Happy Feet’, with dead penguin chicks strewn across a beach in Adelie Land.” What a horrible, yet true, mental picture that statement paints.
We must take action immediately. They are suggesting a protection zone in the D’Urville Sea-Mertz region might be able to ease the pressure on the penguins from tourism and over-fishing. Anything is worth trying before this is yet another species lost to climate change.
