Trump’s Shameful Attitude Toward Our Military

By Susan Kuebler

Donald Trump is a great one for attacking NFL players who take a knee to protest police violence.  He wraps himself all up in the American flag and claims that he is defending “America.”  Bone-spur Trump, with five draft deferments during the Vietnam War, has no idea what defending America means.  Saying you are going to Make America Great Again or resurrecting the old pro-Nazi “America First” slogan from the 1930s is not defending America.  Even building a wall along the Mexican border is not defending America, as most undocumented immigrants come into the country by airplane!

Trump loves the pomp and ceremony associated with being the president of the United States, and especially with being the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.  He likes to talk about “my generals” as though they were his personal employees.  No Mr. Trump, they are not “your generals.”  They swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, not to you personally.   Just like the oath you swore upon becoming President.  That was all the way back in January so maybe you’ve forgotten in now.  You certainly seem to have forgotten all about the First Amendment this week, and got schooled on it by Senator Ben Sasse, a Republican Senator from Nebraska.  But I digress.

Do you remember the three American Marines who died in the helicopter crash off the coast of Australia in August?  You certainly never mentioned their sacrifice in a tweet or any other communication from the White House.  But then maybe you were on vacation and “your generals” forgot to mention it to you.

How about more recently?  Does this ring a bell?  Four Green Berets gave their lives in the country of Niger?  That happened this month, on October 5th.   Since then you’ve tweeted about the political ingrates in Puerto Rico, the NFL, the disgusting news media, more FAKE NEWS, promoted book sales, and your appearance on the Sean Hannity show.  But NOT. ONE. SINGLE. WORD. ABOUT. THESE. SOLDIERS.

Why did you choose to play golf with Senator Lindsay Graham on Monday, October 9th instead of travelling to Dover Air Force Base to show your respect to the remains of Sgt. La David Johnson, the fourth Green Beret who died from wounds sustained in an attack in Niger?  When four Americans were killed in Benghazi, both President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton showed up in Dover to honor the fallen.  Remember the outrage, the hearings, the denunciation of Clinton over Benghazi?  Maybe Niger will become your Benghazi Mr. Trump.

Mr. Trump, you have taken to Twitter to DEMAND respect for the flag from private individuals, the players of the National Football League.  Yet you, the Commander-in-Chief, who should be the first in the country to lead by example in showing respect for the flag, joked about the solemn service of playing Retreat at the end of the day with Sean Hannity.  Incredibly, you did not even seem to know what Retreat was.  You did not know that military custom requires even civilians to stand facing the flag with the hands over their hearts. You cannot demand respect from others that you yourself refuse to give.

The three United States Marines who died in the helicopter crash in Australia deserve better than that from you.

The four Green Berets killed in combat in Niger deserve better than that from you.

America deserves better than that from you.
