It should be no surprise that the White House has become less of an official residence for the most powerful leader in the free world and more of a set-up for a new reality TV show. It has personal drama, catfights, shocking moments, lots of shouting and so many twists and turns that fans of Game of Thrones are still trying to stop their heads spinning.
The latest drama comes from the only women who are prepared to admit that they have had feelings for Donald Trump: Ivana, the First Lady and Melania Trump, the actual First Lady. Confused yet? It’ll certainly upset the ‘Ivanka Trump For First Lady’ members of the Republican base.
Ivana is currently promoting her new book ‘Raising Trump’ about raising Donald Trump’s eldest children and during an interview, she revealed that she still talks to the President once every two weeks. Although she apparently has a direct line, she tends not to use it “because Melania is there, and I don’t want to cause any kind of jealousy or something like that.” She went on to joke that “I’m basically first Trump wife, okay? I’m first lady, okay?”
This ‘joke’ has not gone down at all well with Melania Trump whose spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham has replied that Ivana’s comments have “no substance” and that they were “unfortunately only attention-seeking and self-serving noise.” This barbed comment followed from a barbed statement about how Melania planned to use her role and status as First Lady to help children rather than sell books.
This public feud is yet another first for the Trump presidency as it is the only time that the wife and former wife of a President have fallen out. The only divorced president before Trump is Ronald Reagan who never suffered from having his current wife (and First Lady) publicly feud with his divorced wife.
So far, the spat is limited to Ivana and Melania so, of course, speculation is rising as to whether Marla Maple, Donald Trump’s second wife will enter the fray and intensify the developing catfight. Given that Ivana has also slammed Marla along the way, it might not be long before Marla is drawn into the chick fight in the White House.
It will raise the interesting question of which one is actually the First Lady: the president’s first wife, or his current wife? More importantly, where does that leave the other real First Lady, Ivanka Trump. Whatever the answer is, if we’ve learned anything from the Trumps, disputes like this usually go one or two ways. Spoiler alert, none of those ways end well for anyone involved.
Given the situation, we might as well call the White House a reality TV show. Maybe call it “The Real First Ladies of the United States.” Get used to it, we’ve got about three more years unless Mueller makes impeachment noises.
