I doubt there is anyone who doesn’t remember Hillary Clinton’s disastrous phrase when she called supporters of the Republican party’s presidential candidate D.J. Trump a “basket of deplorables.” I recall several people remarking at the time “that’s the end of her candidacy.” It didn’t matter that she was speaking the truth.
What mattered at that moment was that America was hurting and people were looking for a hero. They were looking for someone to “save them.” They were looking for someone they could believe in. They were looking for help, or someone who they thought would help when the time came. Some were also seeking to break away from what felt like a government that no longer had their interests in mind. Some people were looking for a rebel. A few people were looking for a revolution. These few people are believers in hate and promote hatred through their speech, actions, and policies.
It was those few people that Mrs. Clinton disparagingly referred to as the “basket of deplorables.” She was attempting to speak truthfully, but she reduced her message to name calling. It was a move that did not serve her well.
Now, as we enter the 8th month under this new Administration America finds itself in a deplorable place, being governed by a basket of “deplorables.” What Hillary likely was referring to were the racists, misogynists, and homophobic white supremacists, and what should have become apparent to everyone at this point is that President Trump and many of his administration are among the deplorables! Our Constitution is under attack from within the White House.
Additionally what we have discovered is that there were some speaking in “codes” during the election cycle. We learned the phrase “Russian Adoptions” really means “lifting Russian sanctions (Magnitsky Act).” We have also learned that the members of “the swamp” were not the corrupt members of government and D. C. as we thought. Rather, the members of the “swamp” are actually any Americans on any kind of assistance, including but not limited to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Disability Insurance, etc., etc. The “swamp” to Trump is anyone who needs anything from the Government in the way of “assistance.” Just individuals though, corporations are a different story! Corporations are his friends.
This attitude about members of “the swamp” may explain the President’s response in advance of the arrival of Hurricane Harvey. First, there was a pre-taped video message whose gist was “hope you’re prepared,” and then live, just “good luck!” along with a two thumbs up as he boarded a helicopter. As Texans become needy as a result of Hurricane Harvey, they enter the “swamp.” The President won’t think much of you, as needy as you will be and he’ll think even less of you if you weren’t prepared.
Talk about deplorable. This isn’t leadership.
Also, not leadership is the pardoning of Sheriff Joe Arpaio. The message being sent to Trump’s cronies is “don’t worry, I’ll pardon you.” (I’m the President who’s above the law.)
America has become unrecognizable.
Just as Houston has become unrecognizable overnight, America has become unrecognizable in the past few months. Heather Heyer, an innocent woman, was murdered on 8/12/17 by a neo-Nazi on American soil in Charlottesville, Va. In the weeks since we’ve seen little to right that wrong and instead the haters are louder and more outspoken, more emboldened. (Although to be fair, the lovers are coming out in force and will soon be a dominant force to be reckoned with. )
Several senior officials inside the White House have left, claiming they are going to war with America. So the “deplorables” are gaining more and more support now that Steve Bannon and Steve Gorka are now back at Breitbart, unbound and unchecked, determined to bring chaos to America.
It’s quite the deplorable basket we find ourselves in, isn’t it? And it happened so seemingly quickly (although it’s really been years and years in the making.)
What do we do? We need to DO something!
The first step, seriously, is to get out of resistance and actually accept things exactly as they are. For they are exactly as they are. There is no healing the situation at hand until we agree truthfully what IS. While the Resistance Movement is an important one, we need to transition that movement into a movement that contains the solution within it. What we need now is a vision! What we need now is a direction upward and onward. What we need now is a new, fresh leader!
I said what we need to do is to start by accepting what is. What IS at the moment, is deplorable. We have an Administration that was “installed” by a foreign power. You may still be in resistance to that idea, but every day we move closer and closer to that revelation.
Even if it turns out we can’t prove any of that, the rest of it is still deplorable, and as we find Texas besieged by Hurricane Harvey, we find ourselves adrift without leadership or direction. We the American people have a rare opportunity to show the world what we think and how strong we are.
We have a President of America who spends more time watching Fox News and tweeting on Twitter than he spends in intelligence briefings or security briefings or any kind of briefings at all. We have a presidential family that has run the Secret Service detail in bankruptcy. We have hundreds of (or more) positions unfilled throughout our government and international posts. And we have a President, so hell bent on building a border wall (that a tiny group of people supports), that he’s willing to cut critical funding to other departments just so he gets his way. We have a President who is undoing all the progress the previous administration made in protecting our air, our water, our children, and our most vulnerable.
The current President has revoked Executive Order 13690 which established a federal flood risk management standard and. He cut the FEMA budget by 11 percent. He cut the Coast Guard budget by 15 percent and NOAA which monitors storms among other things by 22 percent. How exactly is to the federal government supposed to respond efficiently to a disaster without the resources needed?
We have a President who watches the disaster on TV and tweets enthusiastically about the “HISTORIC” rainfall. “Spirit of the people is incredible. Thanks!” as if this is all some big reality show and everyone’s giving an excellent performance.
HISTORIC rainfall in Houston, and all over Texas. Floods are unprecedented, and more rain coming. Spirit of the people is incredible. Thanks!

We have a deplorable President who was seated under deplorable circumstances spending deplorable amounts of money and being deplorably insensitive and ineffective.
And we have a deplorable Congress who seemingly doesn’t care.
So, everyone let’s take a deep breath and let’s come together in unity to heal this America, because it is, as it truly always is, up to us! Where we find ourselves may be a deplorable place, but we need not stay here!
Hold the vision of what you believe America to be, and do every day all that you can do to bring that vision into being. There’s no reason the dream of a free republic must die. There is no reason the Great Experiment of America must fail.
She will only fail if we fail her. This is a collective experience. Let’s all create the dream we know is possible. Freedom, equality, peace. Let’s heal the people who are feeling disenfranchised. I’m not sure how we do that, but it will never happen if we don’t start talking about it.
Think about what our Founding Fathers accomplished. Reflect on the resources they had and think of how easy we have it now! It’s time to get to work! It isn’t hard work, and granted our civic duty may not be how we would choose to spend our time.
I ask you this, at this moment in time, what can be more important than saving our country? Seems like it should be fairly high on the list. Join me in this work. Thank you!
