The main stream media and social media have been saturated the last 24 hours with the story about Donald Trump Jr’s meeting, along with Jared Kushner and Paul Manafort, with a possible Russian operative in order to gain some “dirt” on Hillary Clinton during the campaign.
Junior even released the emails he said he received prior to the meeting. They look pretty damning. Everyone who is suddenly a “legal” expert has weighed in on their possible import, both for the president, his son-in-law, and his eldest son.
I would like to echo some of the more reasonable voices out there, such as Jonah Goldberg and Tom Nichols, and tell everyone “Please, just chill.” Enough with the “whataboutism” and the “this is it” pronouncements.
Because working quietly behind the scenes, Robert Mueller has assembled a top-notch team of prosecutors (not investigators) that will be examining every scrap of this information. That these are highly qualified professionals doing their job is evidenced by the fact that there has not been one single leak from Mueller’s team.
An investigation of this scope and magnitude does not happen quickly. Expect months, not days or weeks, to pass before their report and recommendations are ready. Whatever occurs, there are going to be some very unhappy people – either die-hard Trump supporters or die-hard Never Trumpers.
But despite Trump’s claims, this is not a “witch hunt.” It is not even close And Mueller will make certain that every “i” is dotted and every “t” is crossed before he releases his findings.
In the meantime, focus your energy and outrage on issues where you can have an effect, such as the pending healthcare legislation before the Senate or climate change or even the situation with North Korea. Spend your time calling your representative and your Senators.
But as tantalizing as the Trump-Russia connection appears, this issue is in good hands. So take a deep breath, let go and let Mueller handle the rest.
