Trump’s Plan To Dramatically Increase Military Spending Is Unbelievably Ignorant

By Jason Taylor

When Trump described the military as “depleted” in his inaugural address I wondered what was he talking about. Unlike in the late 1930’s when our military was rated “17th” in the world our present one is at the top. In fact, the next 10 countries together don’t spend what we do.

With his “wall,” hiring thousands of more agents to round up the “bad hombres” along with the good hombres, their wives and children, and drastically cutting taxes for the rich, I wonder how long it will take before the money is just not there for Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. And you can forget about our infrastructure getting an overhaul.

This is completely preposterous and moronic. The U.S. outpaces all other nations in military expenditures. World military spending totaled more than $1.6 trillion in 2015. The U.S. accounted for 37 percent of the total. U.S. military expenditures are roughly the size of the next seven largest military budgets around the world, combined. And for all, we spend we have little to show for it. We continue to press the military to solve challenges that are better resolved through political or economic means. At a time when we need to be addressing adjusting to the challenges posed by massive structural changes, changes in the economy, how people and society will-will work in the 21st century, the GOP instead will squander our resources on 10th-century issues.

Our military is as powerful as it is wasteful. Already a third of our tax dollars go to building it up, yet we keep hearing about how much danger we’re in. This is nothing more than a stunt to appease his base, which believes were in a new crusade against Islam. A smart foreign policy can achieve the same results as a powerful military at a fraction of the cost.

“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.” Dwight Eisenhower

Because spending more than the 55 percent on every tax dollar in peace time makes perfect sense. We already have an army 7 times larger than almost every other army in the world COMBINED!! Trump is trying to please Putin. Maybe get us to fight China for him.

First, they give all of our precious money to war profiteering military contractors, then cut any money to any program whatsoever from which we would get back any of the hard earned taxes we pay in, but do keep collecting all that tax from 99.99% of us, while the top few families, mostly who own these military contractor corporations, bask in unneeded lavish government assisted wealth. What were the results last time? Double dip recessions, decades of progress and prosperity lost forever, and a continued march toward tyranny and modern feudalism.

The kind of military buildup Trump has in mind is not the kind of military we need to fight asymmetric wars like terrorism. This buildup is to reward his rich cronies that produce high-tech machines of indiscriminate death. We’d be far safer as a country if we invested in education and infrastructure and became a more welcoming and tolerant society.

Yet again, we are seeing Republican machoism evidenced by large military spending. I think society would benefit much more from $75 million dollars invested in children’s education than a destroyed military helicopter on a botched raid in Yemen. The hypocrisy of Republicans was summed up nicely on a bumper sticker.

“Military:The Biggest Big Government Program of Them All”

  1. In essence if this is successful it will end most diplomatic exercises…the budget director said that the money would be spent here and less aboard and the foreign assistance programs would be cut… his magic plan for ISIS is about the same plan as Obama and Bush…..not a winning strategy. Good post chuq

  2. I asked someone earlier, and maybe I’m just a pacifist and out of touch (though I love my battleships), but what the hell are we defending ourselves against that the defense department needs more money? Terrorism? Don’t think fighter jets and tanks will stop them. Why don’t they just call it the War Department again and be done with it?
