Do you remember Stella Liebeck? Probably not by name, but she was the woman who spilled hot coffee on herself at McDonalds in 1992 and ended up winning nearly three million dollars in the lawsuit. I thought back then that our judges had lost their minds. This year I think most of the country has joined them.
The Republican Party let a man with no political experience and no desire to learn run for President. Why aren’t there safeguards against this? This was bad enough, but then things got worse. His supporters started to defend his statements and behavior by saying “he wasn’t a polished politician.” A polished politician? How about just a decent human being? They continued to defend him even after tape came out of him saying horrible things about women. They defend him still after more than ten women have come forward saying there were actions committed too.
Last night Newt Gingrich was on the Kelly file. I’m not a fan of Fox any longer, but Megyn Kelly was one I could still watch because she hadn’t drunk the Trump kool-aid completely. In fact, I honestly can’t tell who she supports, and this year that is a breath of fresh air. She has covered Trump’s issues and Clinton’s issues both, but I digress. Gingrich ended up getting in a heated exchange with Megyn because she said “if Trump is a sexual predator.” Gingrich lost it and began cutting her off and calling her obsessed with sex. Why does reporting a story, an important story, make her obsessed with sex?
Even more importantly, why are so many willing to ignore it?
Trump’s supporters, Gingrich being one of the most vocal, are claiming all of this is a smear campaign by Hillary. Maybe it is; she’s corrupt enough and has experience with the issue, but let’s really look at it. These woman are coming forward with embarrassing experiences. This is not usually the kind of fame you want. Plus, Trump has threatened to sue every one of them after the election. It’s one time I actually believe him because it involves money that he thinks he can win, and that seems to be all he cares about. Why would these women come forward with false stories knowing they would get sued after the election? I can’t think of a reason. I get all sorts of hate messages just being #neverTrump. I can’t imagine how much worse it is for these women.
I’ve said before and I’ll say it again. This is setting up a very dangerous precedent. Not only have we publicly diminished these women’s stories, which will make future women less likely to come forward, but we’ve taken the stance that these actions don’t matter if you’re running for President. And I care about this on both sides. Just the fact that there are allegations should negate Trump from running, and while Hillary isn’t responsible for Bill’s actions, I also don’t think he should be put back in a position of power because he has abused it.
When I was growing up, the President was supposed to be a good example. Someone children could look up to and want to emulate. But instead of holding them to a higher standard, we are willing to throw away their crimes and behavior because “the other candidate is worse.” And instead of looking at a viable third party option, people are doubling down on supporting this awful behavior.
I’m going to hope these people get their minds back on November 9th, that they wake up and realize what they’ve been doing, but sadly I doubt it. I think they’ve lost their minds for good.
