Why Evan McMullin is a vote for the future

by Lorana Hoopes

As the final debate looms before us, I can’t help but wish that Evan McMullin was going to be on that stage. Not only does he have experience, but he has a calm demeanor and actually talks about the issues. Instead we’re still stuck with Trump and Clinton.

I’m sure Clinton will smile in that patronizing way of hers while Trump does his blustery blowhard act, but neither will tell us a plan. Neither will talk real policies. We’ll be forced to hear again about all her corruption and his ineptitude and harassment claims. I’m not sure I’ll even be able to stomach it. Wouldn’t it be amazing though if we could hear from McMullin and other serious 3rd party candidates?

When people ask me how I can vote for McMullin, my answer is easy. He’s the only one who doesn’t make me want to throw up or slit my wrists. Seriously. He’s a real candidate with credentials and savvy. He picked a real woman to be his VP (I bet she doesn’t even own a pantsuit). More than that though, he represents Hope and the future.

I’m an optimist, but I’m not naive. I know McMullin’s chances of winning are about as good as being hit by lightning or winning the lottery, but McMullin does two very important things for the future whether he wins or loses. One, he helps former Republicans like me care about the down ballot and regardless of who gets elected, we are going to need to keep control of the House and Senate. Two, he is starting the future conservative party.

See, the Republican party is dead. Win or lose this year, Trump has killed it. It has now been divided in two. You have the fascists who will follow Trump at all costs and the spineless Republicans who blindly followed him off this cliff who will no longer be electable to conservatives like myself. Then you have the NeverTrumpers and the “supported but revoked support” Republicans who will never be electable to the Trumpcult. These people will have to find a new home if they want a chance at keeping their jobs. Hence – the new conservative party.

The best news about McMullin is that whether through his message or just the fact that he’s up against the worst two candidates in history (dear God I still don’t know how we got this far), he is going to do something no other Independent has done.

He is going to win a state.

His chances of winning Utah are very high. In fact the latest poll had Trump at 30%, McMullin at 29% and Clinton at 26%. This is amazing, and it will show people that we don’t have to settle for just Democrat or Republican. That’s how they’ve kept the power for so long – and how they’ve managed to vote themselves huge retirements for life and exempted themselves from Obamacare and on and on. McMullin was also polling high in Idaho. Will he win it? Who knows, but getting a percentage of the vote will make the way for the new party. It will give them better ballot options in the next election and possibly even put them on the debate stage where they belong.

So McMullin is important, and voting for him is important. It shows the Democrats and Republicans that we don’t have to play by their rules. It shows them that “we the people” still have power. McMullin is gaining steam like no other third party has been able to do.

I wish he had started sooner, but win or lose, he is winning for the American people.

Like many of you, I can’t wait for this election to be over, but I read a blog from Max Lucado today that said this: “On November 9th, no matter who wins or loses, God will still be in control.” It is faith like this that allows me to vote my conscience, to vote for decency, to vote for the man who will usher in a new party, to vote for Evan McMullin.

  1. I SO wish McMullin had started sooner, and was on the Indiana ballot! I cannot bring myself to vote for Clinton or Trump, but I also cannot vote how I would want to, and that would be for McMullin. He is already making a difference and giving us hope that we will not have another election like this one. I am sure he is going to continue making headway on this election, and I pray that he runs again in 2020, and will be on Indiana’s ballot then.
